It really does look like a "thing!" I don't know whether to call it spider-like or octopus-like, or something else :-) Actually, it sort of reminds me of the "Bloomin' Onion" at the Outback Steakhouse. The colors remind me of a red onion that has been sliced up and served as an appetizer :-)
The browns and purples go very nicely together. I also like the lighting you selected, coming from the upper left and reflecting down to the lower right. Finally, the black tips are very curious. This is a plant that I would like to see for real sometime :-)
